Financial District

Financial District, New York

The Financial District — FiDi — occupies Manhattan's southern tip on the footprint of 17th-century New Amsterdam, the city's oldest streets. Long defined by Wall Street and the trading day, it has steadily become a round-the-clock residential neighborhood. Beginning in the 1990s and 2000s, many landmark office towers were converted into apartments — 15 Broad Street, an early Wall Street condo conversion, is among the best known — and they now sit beside ground-up luxury towers. The result is a varied housing stock: prewar conversions with grand lobbies and generous proportions, plus new-construction condos with amenity floors and water views.

Transit here is unmatched in Lower Manhattan. The 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, A, C, E, J, Z, R, and W trains all serve the district, joined by the PATH to New Jersey and the Staten Island and East River ferries — among the densest transit coverage anywhere in the city. Fulton Center and the WTC Oculus tie the lines together under one roof.

Landmarks and open space are close at hand: Battery Park and its waterfront esplanade anchor the southern edge, the World Trade Center campus and its memorial define the west, and the cobblestoned, restaurant-lined Stone Street offers a historic pocket of nightlife. Brookfield Place, Eataly, and the Seaport add day-to-day shopping and dining. FiDi sits within Community School District 2.
