Great Neck

Great Neck occupies a leafy peninsula on the North Shore of Long Island, jutting into Manhasset Bay and Long Island Sound within the Town of North Hempstead. It is not one town but a mosaic of nine incorporated villages — among them Kings Point, Great Neck Estates, Russell Gardens, Kensington, Saddle Rock, and the compact downtown of Great Neck Plaza — each with its own character. This is Fitzgerald's Gold Coast, the peninsula that inspired the "West Egg" of The Great Gatsby, and the Jazz Age legacy still shows in grand estates and stately stone gateposts. The housing stock spans from classic center-hall Colonials, Tudors, and ranches on generous lots to contemporary new construction and waterfront properties; the larger estates in Kings Point sit at the top of the market, while elevator co-ops and newer condominiums clustered near Great Neck Plaza offer more accessible entry points. Detached houses, two-family homes, and apartment-style ownership all coexist across the peninsula.

For commuters, the Long Island Rail Road Port Washington Branch is the anchor. From the Great Neck station, trains reach Penn Station in roughly 25 to 35 minutes, with a few peak departures running express; since 2023 the branch has also fed Grand Central Madison, opening a one-seat ride to Manhattan's East Side. By car, Northern Boulevard (Route 25A) crosses the peninsula's base, with the Long Island Expressway (I-495) and the Northern State Parkway a short drive south for routes east and into the city.

Open space hugs the water: Steppingstone Park, in Kings Point, offers a Sound-front marina, lawns, and skyline views, while the Great Neck Park District maintains pools, tennis, and recreation facilities, with Manhasset Bay framing the waterfront. The commercial heart is Great Neck Plaza, a walkable downtown along Middle Neck Road with more than 250 shops and restaurants, cafes, bakeries, and boutiques. Public education is provided by Great Neck Public Schools (Union Free School District No. 7), whose campuses include John L. Miller Great Neck North High School and William A. Shine Great Neck South High School, along with several elementary and middle schools across the district.
