Manhasset

Manhasset sits on the North Shore of Nassau County, just east of the Queens line along Manhasset Bay, and grew from early-20th-century country estates into one of Long Island's long-established residential communities. The housing is overwhelmingly detached single-family, and the architecture reads like a catalog of the era: center-hall Colonials, Tudors, Cape Cods, and Mediterranean-style stucco homes with red-tile roofs, most built from the 1920s through the 1940s on generous, landscaped lots. Distinct enclaves give the hamlet its texture — neighborhoods near the water around the incorporated village of Plandome carry grander estate-scale homes, while the Strathmores, carved from former estate land, mix classic Colonials and early ranches with substantial properties. Pricing sits firmly in the upper tier of the Long Island market, with entry-level houses well into seven figures and estate-caliber homes ranging considerably higher; co-ops and condos are limited, so buyers here are largely purchasing detached houses.

For commuters, the Long Island Rail Road's Port Washington Branch is the anchor. The Manhasset station, at Plandome Road and Maple Place, sits about 17 miles from Midtown; peak trains reach Penn Station in roughly 28 to 38 minutes, and because this branch runs to both Penn Station and Grand Central Madison without a Jamaica transfer, the East Side is equally reachable. The neighboring village of Plandome has its own station as well. Drivers rely on the Long Island Expressway (I-495) and the Northern State Parkway just to the south, with Northern Boulevard (Route 25A) cutting through town as the main east-west surface route.

Manhasset's signature draw is Americana Manhasset, the open-air luxury center anchoring the "Miracle Mile" along Northern Boulevard, where roughly sixty designer shops — among them Hermes, Chanel, Cartier, Louis Vuitton, London Jewelers, and Hirshleifers — sit alongside restaurants such as Cipollini and Toku. Green space is woven through town: Whitney Pond Park offers a pond, tennis, basketball and handball courts, walking paths and a community pool, while Mary Jane Davies Green provides a gazebo, playground and lawn, and Manhasset Valley Park adds further trails. Education is served by the Manhasset Union Free School District (District No. 6 of North Hempstead), whose schools include Munsey Park Elementary and Shelter Rock Elementary for grades K-6, with all students continuing to Manhasset Secondary School for grades 7 through 12.
