SoHo
SoHo — "South of Houston Street" — holds one of the world's densest concentrations of cast-iron architecture, much of it built in the mid-to-late 19th century for manufacturing and dry-goods trade. Designated a historic district in the 1970s, the neighborhood preserves those ornate facades, broad windows, and Belgian-block streets, and that heritage shapes its housing: airy artist-era lofts and luxury loft conversions with soaring ceilings, columns, and oversized windows, alongside a smaller set of prewar walk-ups and new condominiums. Many buildings carry co-op or condo loft layouts that prize open, light-filled volume over conventional room counts.
Transit is broad for so compact an area. The 6 runs along Lafayette and the N/R/W along Broadway, the B/D/F/M cross at Broadway–Lafayette, and the A/C/E and 1 sit just to the west — giving quick reach uptown, downtown, and into Brooklyn. The central location is one of SoHo's defining conveniences.
Above all, SoHo is a destination for retail and art. Broadway and the side streets host flagship fashion boutiques, independent shops, and a long lineage of galleries and cultural spaces — the Drawing Center, the Leslie-Lohman Museum, and the nearby Museum of Chinese in America among them. Cobblestoned blocks, design showrooms, and a dense restaurant and cafe scene round out daily life. SoHo falls within Community School District 2.
