Sunset Park

Sunset Park stretches across southwestern Brooklyn between the Gowanus Expressway waterfront and the ridge of Green-Wood Cemetery, and it carries two distinct commercial identities. Along Eighth Avenue runs one of New York City's largest Chinese business corridors — widely known as "Brooklyn's Chinatown" and, to its own community, 八大道 ("Eighth Avenue") — a dense run of Cantonese and Fujianese restaurants, herbal-medicine shops, bakeries, and Asian supermarkets that has grown steadily since the 1980s. A few blocks west, Fifth Avenue anchors a long-established Latino commercial strip. The housing stock is defined by handsome late-19th- and early-20th-century rowhouses, many faced in limestone or brownstone with stoops and bay windows, alongside brick multifamily walk-ups and a growing number of converted and newly built condominium units; two-, three-, and four-family houses are common, giving the area a strong owner-plus-rental-income character.

Transit runs on two spines. The N train's BMT Sea Beach line surfaces at the Eighth Avenue station in the heart of the Chinese corridor, giving a one-seat ride toward Manhattan, while the D, N, and R trains run under Fourth Avenue along the neighborhood's western edge. The B35, B63, and B70 buses cross the district, and the Gowanus Expressway (I-278) and nearby Belt Parkway connect drivers to the wider region and the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge to Staten Island.

The neighborhood takes its name from Sunset Park itself, a hilltop green space whose crest is one of the highest points in the borough, offering sweeping views across New York Harbor to Lower Manhattan, the Statue of Liberty, and the New Jersey shoreline, with a large public pool and recreation center below. Along the water, Industry City — a sprawling early-20th-century warehouse and manufacturing complex — has been reborn as a campus of design studios, food halls, makers, and retail, while the adjacent Brooklyn Army Terminal and Bush Terminal Park extend public access to the shoreline. Schools fall within NYC Community School Districts 15 and 20.
