Upper East Side

The Upper East Side stretches above 59th Street between Fifth Avenue and the East River, with Central Park forming its western edge. It is known for a stately, unhurried character and a housing stock weighted toward prewar co-ops — many with formal layouts, high ceilings, and white-glove service — alongside postwar and contemporary condominiums and a run of limestone and brownstone townhouses. Fifth, Madison, and Park Avenues set the architectural tone, while the blocks east toward the river offer a broader range of building types and values.

Transit runs on two spines. The 4/5 express and 6 local under Lexington Avenue stop at 59th and 86th, with the 6 adding 68th Street–Hunter College, 77th, and 96th. The Second Avenue Subway's Q train serves newer stations at 72nd, 86th, and 96th, easing the historic crowding on Lexington and improving access to the East Side's eastern blocks. Crosstown buses cut through Central Park to the West Side.

The neighborhood's signature is culture and retail: Museum Mile along Fifth Avenue includes the Met, the Guggenheim, the Neue Galerie, the Jewish Museum, and the Cooper Hewitt, while Madison Avenue is a corridor of flagship boutiques and galleries. Central Park and Carl Schurz Park provide green space, and the dining and gourmet-market scene is deep. The Upper East Side falls within Community School District 2.
