A voice-first assistant for the drive

Google said on October 20, 2026, that Gemini is now available globally in Android Auto and cars with Google built-in. Drivers can use natural-language voice requests for tasks such as navigation, calls, music and questions without touching a phone.

The company is also beginning to roll out Personal Intelligence on Android Auto. The opt-in feature can connect Gemini with selected Google services, including Workspace apps such as Gmail and Google Calendar, Google Photos, Google Maps, YouTube and Search, to produce responses tailored to a user’s information.

Examples Google demonstrated

Google presented the feature as a way to combine information that might otherwise require several steps. Its examples include asking for a flight gate and whether the flight is on time; finding an indoor restaurant along a route that matches a user’s usual preferences; or navigating to a doctor’s appointment without stating an address.

Other demonstrations involved locating a car wash from a previously taken photo, or finding a coffee shop discussed the previous day. These are company examples, rather than independently tested results.

Controls and rollout

According to Google, apps are not connected until a user enables Personal Intelligence, and the connections can be switched off in Gemini settings. Google also says cars with Google built-in provide personal responses only when the user is in the vehicle with their phone connected.

Without Personal Intelligence, Google says in-car navigation, music, calls and general questions remain available, though answers will not be personalized. The company said the feature starts rolling out on Android Auto from October 20, while availability for cars with Google built-in is planned in the coming months.

Reader takeaway

For drivers who choose to connect supported Google apps, the rollout is intended to reduce voice-query steps for details such as plans, saved places and travel information. Availability of Personal Intelligence differs by platform: Android Auto begins first, while cars with Google built-in are slated for the coming months.
